Evening time

It's just getting dusk.  I am cooking hamburgers in a frying pan because I don't feel like fiddling around with the grill tonight.  Although I have done absolutely nothing today (it's raining outside) that should take any energy,  I'm dragging.  Doing nothing can be more enervating than getting out and working.

There's supposed to be a big moon tonight.  If the clouds thin out enough, I'll  turn out all the security lights and go sit on the porch for a smoke.  The woods look really good at night in the moon light.  It's a little chilly out there but it isn't so humid, so it's a good night for just sitting and listening to what goes on in the woods after dark.

Night is really the best time for just relaxing.  Especially in winter when you can have a fire, and good cup of coffee.  I've got one of those big comfortable Lazy Boy chairs right by the hearth,  and I can stretch out and just enjoy being warm, clean , well fed and safe.  I appreciate those things.

  1. Harry, just add one or more loved ones to that last sentence and that's all most of us want to begin with.

But that concept apparently threatens certain groups and now puts us on some list somewhere.

  2. I expect I am on more than one. I'm hoping they'll go after the younger folks first. ;-)

Me too, Harry, and the older I get...more so everyday.

  3. I saw a show on television once, about Confederate veterans. They quoted one old man from the last encampment at Gettysburg, I think it was around 1936. He said he was proud of his service, but that it was good to eat when you were hungry, warm yourself by the fire when you were cold, to lay down and sleep when you were tired, to be clean, and safe. I understood exactly what he meant and I've always reminded myself, when I was bothered about something, that in the things that matter I'm doing ok.

  4. I can't imagine you'd think about leaving your mountain. I love that we're somewhat rural, at least not a city or suburb and we can sit out at night and let the kids run without worrying.

    1. We've lived here a really long time. My wife and I are both over sixty, and I'm not sure this is the best place for us as we get older. It's beautiful here, and I'd like to keep the place as a family retreat if it works out that way. But my wife is ready for some bright lights. I wouldn't mind not having to work like a dog keeping the place up, if it comes to it. Would be nice to just pick up the phone and get someone to come fix whatever is broken instead of me having to do it. I do know what you mean, though.

  5. I can't do coffee at night then sleep. Substitute a drink, hot chocolate or decaf tea and I'm in. Love fireplaces. Hopefully we end up getting a house that has one.

    1. I never sleep more than two hours at a time anyway. I always wake up, then go back to sleep. Coffee doesn't seem to effect that.

I hope you do find a house with a fireplace. Even if it doesn't get very cold, you can always build a little fire in winter just for atmosphere. I had one in my house at Camp Lejeuene, first house I ever owned. I enjoyed it although it didn't get really cold there very often.

    2. Harry, There seem to be enough candidates that we'll find one. I don't think we will primarily heat with it for a variety of reasons but I like a fire in the evening and the emergency heating/ cooking option.

    3. Be sure to have the chimney swept before you use it. I had a chimney fire in my wood burning stove this past Christmas season. I clean the fireplace and wood burning stove chimneys every Fall, but I guess I didn't do a good enough job over time.

  6. Even though it is chilly, let's not get so hasty with the winter talk...lol. I cannot turn out street lights to enjoy the sky...too bad. I cannot do the recliner thing, but a nice sofa is great for relaxing at the end of the day.

No energy? Rain and clouds do that to me.

    1. I just have days like that. No motivation to do anything and no energy to do it with. Thankfully, I'm not always that way.

I don't go work outside when it's raining because it's too easy to have an accident. Getting hurt up here would be bad, it might be the weekend before anyone knew about it but me.

  7. oh Harry - it is so sad because some people never learn to really enjoy what matters in life. but you know what it is and so do we. it took us a while to figure out what really mattered, but thank goodness that we finally learned. we've got some clouds here tonight...but still the moon shines brightly. we have no light pollution in our area so we can see the stars and moon with no man-made light. sitting in the hottub together, looking at the sky - there is no dream that isn't possible. i am glad that you have a nice recliner and hope those hamburgers were as tasty as they sound. have a good night, my friend!

    1. The burgers were ok. Yesterday I had burgers with pork and beans, tonight I had burgers with chili, and tomorrow I'll have burgers with something else. There were six of them in the package so I am having two a night.

It's raining again here, so I can't see the moon. Wish I could, moon lit nights in the mountains are spectacular.

    2. Harry - the burgers sound real good! you need to take food pics and put them on your blog and turn into a real woosie - bahahahahah! as for the moon and seeing it and the stars...even on cloudy nights i know it's there. it's comforting. i imagine with how high up you are that your moon-lit nights are so serene. that makes me happy for you.

      your friend,

    3. Kymber, I could never do little food pictures like on your blog because I don't arrange the food so nicely, nor do I have the variety in each meal you do. :-(

I always like looking at your meal pictures. We have good meals when my wife is home but if she is not I just eat something out of a can more times than not. It's quick and there's no mess to clean up.

You should see a moonlit night here, especially in winter when there's snow on the ground. It's very spectacular, and very cold!
