A Clockwork Orange

When I was in college, I took a class in science fiction as a literature genre. It sounded interesting and I figured it should be an easy A and not much work.  That did not turn out to be the case, but it was a good course. I read a number of books I would never otherwise have even known existed.

One of these was A Clockwork Orange.  Basically, it was about youth gone wild. The main characters took great pleasure in attacking people at random and beating them up.

Now forward ahead in time forty years and we have the "Knock out game."  I first saw a video of this on BBC America a few weeks ago, and assumed it was just some random psychopath at work.  A young woman is walking down the street in the video, talking on a cell phone. Even before the hulking black guy came running up behind her, I was thinking that this was an example of very poor situational awareness. I had no idea what was about to happen because I'd missed the narrative leading into the video.

This huge man runs up behind this girl, and hits her on the side of the head as hard as he could. She went down in a heap, I doubt she even knew he was there. The assailant walks away grinning, and the girl just lays there on the sidewalk. Nobody tried to help and nobody tried to apprehend the attacker.

Then a few days ago there was a post on a blog I read, and I learned this is a "game" that has now spread to the U.S.  The "players" are young black men for the most part, and the victims are elderly people, women and kids at random.  One man has died from head injuries sustained when he was attacked from behind by two of these characters.

The stories about it spreading are starting to show up on the mainstream media now. Fox News had a segment tonight. The newscaster said that most of the people who are doing the attacking are minors, and they know even if they get arrested, they'll get off light.

Do you remember the old Q Ships from World War One.  The Brits would take a crappy old freighter, arm it to the teeth, and hide the guns under boxes and tarps. When  a U boat came up to sink the ship with gunfire , in order to save a torpedoe, the British would tear off the covers and open fire.

One way to put an end to this game would be to put some police on the street dressed up as the target demographic, and let them shoot these individuals as an act of self defense. I know they won't do that but I wonder how else this is going to be brought under control?

One thing is certain, people who live in cities and have to walk on the street had better stop talking on the cell phone and listening to music. The Goblins are out in force.  You have to wonder what kind of human being would do this to an innocent person, and of course the answer is, a human being wouldn't. The individuals who are playing this game are not people and don't deserve to be treated as such. Think of them more as Morelocks or Zombies, which is more appropriate.

  1. Well, I am very elderly, a female on oxygen and carry concealed. I am always aware of my surroundings. Bring it on!

    1. Tewshooz, I guess if more people were carrying and had the mind set to use a weapon, less of this kind of gangsterism would go on. But most people don't carry, for whatever reason and they make easy marks.

  2. I've never read Clockwork Orange. I did however see the movie. It is messed up! I should read the book. It's always better than the movie.

    1. Alissa, the book is even more sickening than the movie was. I never figured out what the reason for writing it was and the professor didn't enlighten us. But at least then it was fiction, and today it seems to be fact.

  3. Harry - this kind of stuff really bothers me. i never read the book, but i did see the movie and it traumatized me - i have pieces of that movie show up in my nightmares to this day! i hate to even mention this but there are youtube videos out there of minors stepping on kittens, puppies and it is a big deal - there are websites devoted to this garbage!!! there were attacks happening at bus stops back in the city that we lived in where the attacks were so bad the bus drivers just kept driving by?!?!?! i am so glad to be away from all of this horror. it bothers me right to the core of my soul....some people say we are living in Huxley's Brave New World (did you know that he died on this specific day 50 yrs ago...no one remembers because of JFK). i would have to agree. some people say we are living in Orwell's 1984. i would have to agree with that, too - because both of those books tell the same tale - just mirror images of the same awfulness. Orwell fears we are going to be censored and controlled - Huxley fears we'll be so busy texting that we won't care. and then there is A Clockwork Orange, where kids will think it's fun and funny to videotape yourself whacking someone to the ground and posting it to youtube. the nutcases are running the asylum Harry.

on a nicer note - we went to our friend C & B's this evening. B got some really nice salt cod from a friend and was planning to make fishcakes. B knows how much i love fishcakes so invited us over for supper. B's brother D stopped in and stayed for supper too. we had a lovely time. our friendships were even more solidified with more secrets of the communities being shared with trust. C, of course, had my fave wine (i think she has 12 boxes of it in the basement), we laughed and talked and shared and we are just home now, with full bellies, tired, ready to climb on the couch and watch a movie perhaps. or maybe just to bed. it was a really nice evening.

i hope that your wife had her cuddly bed on the couch with pillows and a blanket, i hope the fire was blazing, i hope that you are both happy and content looking at this coming week and not having anything to do except what needs to be done, and whatever you are in the mood to do!

    your friend,

    1. You know, Kymber, things just seem to get more horrific. I swear next people will be getting eaten by the morlocks. It's hard for me to understand why anyone would do this kind of thing? Attacking someone from behind is not going to bring you any enhanced prestige, surely? Hitting women and old people in the head can't make your "homies" think you are more of a man in any way I can understand. I'm safe on the mountain, and I'm an older guy but I'm not a push over for slugs, yet it still depresses me.

I'm glad you had some time iwth your friends . That cod would make good long term storage food, wouldn't it? I seem to remember the Vikings used dried Cod as travel food, and as a winter food source.

We are doing ok and enjoying the peace and quiet here. It is really cold tonight, in the teens here on the mountain, but we are all warm and snug. Sort of an island of tranquility for us here in the mountains.

    2. Harry - salt cod, and/or any kind of salt fish stores indefinitely. yes, the vikings used it as travel food - please someday let me tell you the incredible Mi'kmaq stories and songs about the beautiful, blonde "gods" who came across the ocean, wild vikings who intermarried with the most peaceful natives ever, the Mi'kmaq on my island almost 1,000 yrs ago. it is said that our island is Markland and Vinland in the ancient viking stories - we have viking ruins to prove it. oh but how i blather. however, my dream is to one day write the history of my island going back to when the vikings landed. yes, here in the canadian maritimes, salting fish is a way of creating long term food storage...and everyone here has about a hundred pounds of salt fish on hand at any time. our friends invited us over because his friend had given him fresh salted cod - nothing like it in the world!

you haven't posted today and that is a good thing - i know that it means that you and your wife are having some down-time, spending some time together, keeping warm and napping...and that is what i would have wished for you both today. tomorrow i hope that you do much eating and eat some good food...and more naps. i wish all my best to you and yours...you have always been such a good friend! thanks Harry!

    3. Kymber,
We have been scrambling here. This weather has been every bit as nasty as the weather forecasters said it would be, and this is our first big storm of this winter so there is always more to do first time out.

If I was a Viking I would have brought some Norse women with me. Seems like if you were going to settled you'd need women from home. But maybe those guys were the first one's there and needed some feminine companionship before their wives got there, you think?

We are doing ok, even with the weather. As long as I can stay inside I am alright although I had to go out in the freezing downpour and clear a clogged diversion ditch up on the meadow today. That was not fun.

You know you and J rate mighty high on my list, never doubt that.

  4. Harry, A few folks have fought back successfully. One guy in St Louis went all stabby, think he killed one and hurt another. A Goblin in Lancing, MI tried to go all knock out with a taser. His taser misfired but the guy's .40 didn't. The guy shot him in the stomach and leg then did not finish said Goblin because he begged or something.

The only real thought I have on your cop idea is that I'm not so sure any law enforcement agency has put meaningful effort into stopping this phenomena. Can't say 100% they haven't but if they have it has not made the news, even the local circuit says something.

Goblins who "play the knockout game" are free game for whatever in my book. Sort of like Marv in Sin City said " I love hitmen. No matter what you do to them, you don't feel bad."

Well, it makes me feel better that there are a few stalwarts out there. If enough people fight back maybe the arschlocks playing this game will quit. They don't strike me a very brave people given their manner of attack and who they choose for victims.

There's been no effort to stop it that I've heard of, and now as a result it's going on in our state capitol. Thanks to Twitter and all this social media things get out of hand really quickly. It doesn't take a lot to get a certain type of person to play copy cat.

I'm with you. There are individuals without whom we would all be better off, and they are not missed when they are converted to plant fertilizer.

    2. Harry, I hadn't heard of it over in Atlanta, Interesting. In Louisiana (where I currently live) I have not heard of such a thing. NO is by all regards very dangerous so maybe it could pick up there but out in the west central sticks where we reside I can't see such a thing happening.

For better or worse our police take a pretty hard line approach. I've heard reputable tales that the Parish sheriff harasses individual scumbags until they leave; in some cases helping them get set up elsewhere. He regularly brings drug dogs into schools to scare kids into staying away from that stuff. Also sex offenders are not allowed to go to the fair; under penalty of a year in jail doing hard labor. For better or worse the cops down here do not play.

As to the 'knock out game' I think (like your neck of the woods) it is unlikely to catch on. The odds somebody would gather their self (after getting punched), grab the shotgun in their truck, call their buddies, and go looking for that guy are just too high for anybody to go punching random people.

The saying that a well armed society is a civil society has some merit.

    3. There is another reason we don't have to worry about it here related to the demographics of our county but I dare not be more specific least Jesse come picket my gate. :-)

    4. I bet it shows up in New Orleans before long. It is clearly an urban phenomenon and does seem to be spreading.

  5. It isn't "Mostly" Blacks, it's entirely Blacks at least here in the states. I haven't seen one mention of White teenagers doing this at all in the three or more years it has been hitting the headlines. Of course this type of activity has been going on for decades. It changes periodically they sometimes use bricks or tazers. I personally witnessed just such an attack right in front of my car almost 20 years ago where the Blacks jumped out of a car and attacked an old White guy with broken bricks. Myself and the guy right behind me got out and ran the attackers off and then held the victims head together with my t-shirt.

They drug that trial out for years until the victim actually died of old age and then the PA dropped the case.

Ya know there are reports that the Tulsa riots which some claim were started because of a Black man being falsely accused of rape (Some say Justly) that it actually started because of a number of these group attacks on Whites.

    1. just read in the paper that a person with an arab name was arrested for the 'knock out' as a hate crime because he attacked a Jewish man because he was Jewish. if it is true it is a foot in the door for law enforcement to go after the criminals for hate crime no matter what the color.

    2. I can't keep up with it all, but it's the copy cat aspect of this kind of thing that makes me nervous. People are slow to adopt the habits of other ethnic groups unless it's something awful and then they seem to make the transition with little difficulty.

  6. I know it's blacks , but I guess I just didn't muster the morale courage to say so outright. This is not a society that rewards truth if it reflects poorly on a minority group. Too many years of having to sit through "human relations" training every quarter.

I haven't heard of this until just recently, and I thought it started in England and had blossomed over here. Even in England it was the same ethnic group doing it, so I supposed it just appealed to them over here.

Beating up lone individuals by groups has been going on for a long time. The famous video of the Somalis gang gleefully beating up old folks, a pregnant woman and two little children getting off a school bus comes to mind. I often wonder if the church types that brought them into the U.S. as "refugees from violence" still think that was an idea God sent them? But this hitting someone in the head and prancing off I have not seen before.

  7. There was a spate of this in the UK a while ago, morons attacking people randomly whilst their pals filmed it on their mobile phones. They called it "happy slapping" , I haven't heard much about it lately so presume the novelty/shock value wore off for those who found it fun to do this stuff and then post it on you tube or share it with their mates. You have to worry about the mentality of these guys though,

    1. There are always people who will hurt other people for fun. One of the most disgusting things about this kind of activity is that they seem to single out the very categories of people that even criminals once considered to be "off limits."

  8. I watched A Clockwork Orange years ago and it so powerfully impacted me (in a negative way) that I could never watch it again. Those people were pure evil. I'm thinking the "cure" in that movie just might be what we need to do. I don't know what has happened to people today, to be utterly uncaring about anything but themselves.

    1. right there in the Bible, 'lovers of themselves'. unregenerate human nature in a fallen world, in a 'tolerant' society with no restraints.
when the tipping point comes and the majority wallows in sin the end of that society is near. i feel sorry for the decent people of any color who are lumped in with the evil doers and who are stuck in scary neighborhoods.
of course, that may be all of us before very long.

    2. Kathy, there are people like that in real life even though it's hard to believe it. I think I remember reading somewhere that "art imitates reality" or words to that effect. In this case, it's reversed.

  9. Most of these attacks are happening in East Coast cities, where the citizenry gave up their right to self defense long ago. It's predictable that the thugs are now taking over. We reap what we sow. Maybe this will be a wake up call, and more folks will get the laws changed...eventually being allowed to conceal carry again in the city.

    1. All these cell phones and social service things like twitter spread this kind of thing. It's the darker side of technology we all use. Here in my state you can arm yourself and we have stand your ground laws, but the people being victimized, women, old people, and kids, tend to be easy targets.

  10. Deb, it would really be unpleasant to live in the inner city or in the suburbs which have become home to the kind of individuals who do that. The thing I don't understand is that these characters are as happy to prey on their own ethnic group as on anyone else.
