Tomorrow will be a busy day.

My laptop went down again and this time I can't get it to work. So, tomorrow I will take it to the computer repair shop in town, assuming they are open. I'm going to buy a new computer at Walmart, but I would like to have this old one fixed so I don't have to try to round up all those drivers if I can avoid it. Besides, with only one computer in the house, when it fails I am left to rely on the Kindle HD, which is ok for reading and surfing the web but not very useful for anything serious. Never got above freezing here today and it's really cold outside now. By early morning I don't care to think what it will be like outside. All the animals are provided for with warm places to sleep, so I'm not too worried about the cold other than it's very inconvenient. Everything takes longer to do when the weather is so frigid. Ragner and Rowena are going to have to go to the vet . I hope I can get them in tomorrow, because I don't have an appointment. If I have to I will just go sit there until they see my ferrets. Neither of them are doing well, and I'm not sure what the problem is but it is beginning to look like adrenal disease, which is to ferrets what distemper is to dogs. It can only be cured by surgery or by implants, and the latter does not always work. Not much else to tell.

    1. Merry Christmas is good. Hope you and your wife enjoyed the holiday and a little down time. Some people only get the day off but I'm hoping you got at least a few days.

  2. Harry,

good luck with your Ferrets and your laptop. I would get the ferrets help first before I would mess with the laptop. Computers are disposable, animals are not.

  3. Can't pay my bills or balance my accounts without a computer, but I do plan to get the ferrets in as soon as I can. They are not on deaths' doorstep, I just don't think they are getting better like they should be.

  4. Hope you can get your laptop fixed. It is so annoying when that happens. I save my photos and important stuff to an external hard drive from time to time just in case :)

Hope you had a lovely Christmas day Harry. I survived the day here. It turned out to be a very pleasant day weather wise, which was a huge relief. I am now looking forward to catching up on some blogs over the next day or so :)

    1. Tania, are you wiped out by having all that company at your house? I would be if it were me.

I have all my important things backed up on flash drives, mainly it's just the inconvenience. For instance, the spelling checker doesn't work on this Kindle and I am the worst speller in the world.

  5. I do hope you get a new computer soon. Such a pain when technology fails.

    1. Well, I went to look at new ones but they all have Windows 8, which looks like nothing I have ever seen before and I'm sick of learning new Microsoft Operating Systems. I have had to learn every one since Windows 3.0. I took my computer to the shop, so now we'll see how it goes. Yes, I have been having a lot of that lately. Computer went, security cameras went, I'm blowing the big security light bulbs one after the other in this ungodly cold. My motion detectors are malfunctioning, probably the cold. It really is a pain.

    2. it is good to find now what the effects of cold are. you can research new equipment with extreme temps--both high and low-- in mind. it is better to learn now than when it might count heavily against you.

  6. I'm due for a new laptop but I hate the transition. I still have my old laptop up and running in case I need it, so I suppose I could have 2 old ones next to the new one at work.
Lame, I know, but I grow emotionally attached.

Hope the ferrets end up being ok!

    1. If I could get a Windows 7 Machine, which I can use, or a Vista, I would be more relaxed about buying a new one. But I fiddled around with the display model at the store today and it was just like learning to read again. I hated Windows 8.

I can't get the ferrets into the vet until 0900 on Saturday. Until then they are getting benedryl and some other prescription drug I can never remember the name of but it's for itching.

  7. You might try running Puppy Precise Linux on it as it will run out of the cd tray without messing with the current system. If the laptop is mechanically good it should work, it is fast, I run it on a pentium 3 laptop. It is free.

    1. Would it run Quicken, Word 10 and Excel 10? Those are what I really have to have. I can't download one right now because all I have is this Kindle with the computer in the shop, but it sounds like something to pursue when I am back up with a computer.

  8. Man I hope the weasels are going to be OK. Best wishes there.

Did ya ever think about just getting a desk top? Ya get twice the computer compared to laptop prices and they last much longer in my experience. I try to have one of each or used to these days I just make do with a desktop.

    Merry Christmas as well.

Just catching up with blogs tonight as much as possible.

    1. I hope so too. They are not looking very good right now. If it is adrenal disease, they will have to be operated on and you know how that often works out from your experience with your hedgehog.

Desk tops are just too big and bulky for me. I like to be able to just open the computer and go to work, either in the upstairs study, the apartment, or the family room like I'm working from now. I know if I was into computers I would probably go the desk top route, that is all my son will have, but with the few things I do I don't need much in the way of computing power. Just spreadsheets, word processing, the internet and quicken.
