The Plan of the Day

It's cold and dreary.  In a few minutes I'm going to town for lunch, then to the grocery store to look for any new magazines.

Last night I signed up for Paypal. I never had a Paypal account, never needed one. But I found a photo of a ferret wearing a gas mask I really want, and it's copyrighted. So, I went to buy it. They only wanted three bucks.  When I started to fill out my credit card info, I saw the site was in Russia. There are lots of legitimate businesses in Russia, but the last time I used my credit card to buy something there, I started getting people in Russia charging their monthly internet bills to my card.

The only other way to pay them was with paypal.  I didn't like giving Paypal access to my bank account for "verification" purposes but I did then I changed the two passwords on the account.

I went back, ordered my picture, but I didn't get it. As far as I can tell, I can't download the picture, even though I paid for it, until the funds transfer from my account to Russia. So even though I paid for it, the picture is still sitting in "the cart" on my account at the picture company. What a pain in the derriere. If I didn't want that picture for the header on my blog I'd just forget the whole thing.

When I get back from town, I'm going to build a fire in the fireplace and take a nap on the couch.

That's my plan of the day.
USS New Jersey pounds the Bekka Valley  in Lebanon, 1983. Wish  I had a copy of that POD.

  1. Go to ebay.com,
go down to the bottom of that page where it says "ebay companies".
    choose paypal.

if this isn't the same page that you tried last night, you may have a problem, and I'd report it and change my credit card numbers. one third of credit card fruad comes from Russia, and the other from China and India.

    1. What I am saying is that you were probably spoofed into giving out your credit card number

    2. Could be but I doubt it. After I saw I was going to have to pay using paypal, I closed the browser, went to paypal.com, and opened the account. Then I went back to the photo company page, opened an account (only had to give them my email address and name) , ordered the picture, and paid for it. Paypal sent me a receipt, but it was caveated with the note that because my account is linked to checking, and not a credit card, that they (pay pal) recommend the seller not deliver the goods until the money arrives. So my picture is just sitting in the shopping cart. I suppose I could have fallen afoul of evil doers, but if so they aren't going to get much, since that particular account never has more than 40 dollars or so in it. It's usually just for transferring money.

  2. I worry a bout this sort of thing as well. What I do is get a 'pre-paid' Visa card at the supermarket for twenty bucks and I use that. This way if it is a scam, the most they can squeeze out of it is the $20.

If you wanna see if the PayPal thing was legit or not, try sending me a dollar or something through PayPal (zero@commanderzero.com)..if it shows up in my account, its legit.

    1. I thought I remembered you had a paypal account on your web page. I wonder if the button will work for me. WordPress won't let me leave comments on your page unless I delete my "moniker", email and web page address from the form for comments. Maybe it thinks I am a bad guy or something.

    2. Zero, I just tried to go to your web page to send a buck and see if it works, but I can't get to your page. I keep getting a "Yahoo" page that says "Error establishing a database connection." I'll try again in a few minutes. It's probably my no good Windstream provider acting up again. This weather has played merry hell with them.

    3. Ok. I got on your page and sent a buck. I got a reciept from paypal, so if you get the transfer we will know I got a legit account. Thanks for the help on that. You can keep the dollar, don't spend it all in one place!

    4. Yup, yup....got the email earlier today and replied to you in email.

I host the website through Yahoo because I *thought* they'd be really reliable but sometimes I get these weird outages.

  3. You just need to get another ferret and buy him a gas mask, and then you can take all the pictures of him that you want. Plus you get an excuse for buying another ferret.

    1. I never have to buy ferrets, there are too many looking for a home as it is. I don't know where they got the ferret sized gas mask but it's a great photo. If I ever get this worked out I am going to use it for the header on my blog.

  4. I have made close to 200 transactions on Ebay using Paypal and have had no problems. Use only a dedicated Credit card and this gives you two layers of security if there is a fraud. Like the first "Anoni-mouse" commenter said if you are on the real Paypal you should have no problems. If you got duped by a spoof all bets are off. Best way to sign up is to go through Ebay.

    1. Well, nothing bad has happened to my checking account yet, but then neither has the $3.00 for the photo gone out of it. I've always avoided things like this, but I want that picture!

    2. Given that you opened an account on Paypal directly and not on a link provided by the vendor you should be OK. Some transactions depending on how it is set up require the seller to accept the funds transfer from his end. He will likely get a notification and then OK the transaction. Unless he has fallen off the face of the earth or changed email accounts or, or, or

    3. Well, I copied his picture anyway, but there's a "spoiler" on it, a camera image and a 12, and I had to cut a bunch of the picture away to make it work. So if I get stiffed and don't get my picture at all, at least the guy can't say I ripped him off. Don't want him setting the bald guys with the prison tats on my ass, you know! I hear the Russian mafia is the worst.

  5. I hope you get your picture after so much trouble. I have used PayPal for years with no issues so far. It is how I get paid for my blogging projects.

    1. Well, so far my money left my account and was received by the Russian company, but I still can't get the picture and they aren't answering my emails. I will "endeavor to persevere" like the old Indian in The Outlaw Josey Wales.
