Saturday

A friend from outside the country sent me this link.  Given the times, I thought I would post it here.

When the Music Stops

I'm getting a lot of spam on the blog, I suspect my little "friends" in Europe are largely responsible since it started the same time they discovered my blog.  I had 252 pieces of spam in the filter today. If you write anonymously, there's a chance of your comment being picked up in the filter. I try to check everything before I delete it, but you can see how it would be easy to miss a "real" comment in that much spam. So if you post something and it doesn't appear, that is probably what happened

Incidentally, if you get an incredibly stupid comment that consists primarily of grade school vulgarities, it's probably my troll. She and her sidekick seem to have a lot of time on their hands, because now the woman is  finding comments she doesn't like and attacking those people. I thought the European welfare states provided free psychiatric care to those in dire need of it , but it's obvious these individuals have not availed themselves of it. I'm not being facetious either, these are some seriously mentally ill people.

Writing about my troll reminded me of this movie.  I wanted to warn folks to give it a miss. There's some nice scenery in it, but that's all it offers.  I thought it was a movie about hiking, but in reality it's about a young woman who is a prostitute, a drug addict, and seems to be bi-polar. There are some scenes about her hiking through the wilderness but there are a lot more scenes interspersed with the hike that illustrate her extremely trashy life experiences. It was a real disappointment, and I wasted my money on it.

  1. Thanks for the heads up on the movie. I'll save my money for something else. It did look pretty, so I was tempted.

    1. The television adds only showed the main character hiking through pristine wilderness. It didn't show her plying her trade as a prostitute in city side streets, or using a wide variety of serious drugs, or having episodes of insane behavior. I don't have to pay to watch someone do that, all I have to do is turn on the television. Which is why I rarely watch it anymore.

  2. This morning we were talking about some of the very things included in the article. People here wait until a blizzard is bearing down on us before they even think about about the fact that they could be snowed in for several days, and then the race is on to see who can get to the stores for bread and milk first. Should the EBT cards fail to work, it would be complete insanity after two or three days. And not just in the inner city. I often wonder why there are so many who can't see beyond the end of their noses. The unrest that we have been seeing is, I fear, just a sample of what's coming. But I'm called crazy for stepping up my preps all the more lately. I may be crazy, but I will be a well fed crazy. And so will my family.

    1. You aren't crazy. People said the same thing about Noah, and it didn't work out too well for them then.

If I was going to write a post apocalyptic novel, I wouldn't write about climate change, or asteroids, I'd entitle it "Where my check is?"

  3. Harry - that article that you linked is pretty scary....scary but so likely to happen. what am i saying? it IS happening. ugh.

i am glad to be one of the people that your trolls considered to insult - bring 'em on! but one thing you mentioned that i have never thought about was checking your spam comments - i have like 10,000 comments in there that i have never checked - woops!

thanks for the heads up on the movie. we don't go to movies or buy movies we just watch what's available on netflix. so when it gets to netflix we'll be sure to skip it. sorry you wasted your money and time on it!

    much love buddy! your friend,

    1. Kymber, I never checked my spam filter much before this wave of garbage started rolling in. About the only way to get in the filter is to post anonymously but I am pretty sure that I lost some comments from legitimate folks because people will email me and tell me their comment didn't post. It could always just be blogger, too. There may be worse blog programs than blogger but I couldn't name them.

I know you won't be any more perturbed by juvenile antics than I am, which is to say, not at all. But I do know this particular group of trolls don't hesitate to attack people whose harmony they do disturb, and I'd hate to have them jumping on people whose only offense is reading my blog.

That movie was real garbage. I had been looking forward to it, too.

    1. The surprising thing is how much effort they put into trying to upset a person. For instance, based on some jokes I've made about my age, most of their comments , once they get past the vulgarities, are aimed at my age. They say things like "You are old!". Well, no sh*t, Sherlock. But the fact doesn't particularly bother me.

I wonder if the female is perhaps a quadriplegic and spends her days holding a stylus in her teeth, painstakingly pecking out obscene messages to people on the internet. That's kind of how I picture her.

  5. Now you know why I don't have a blog, although I would just love to have one. I neither have the time or patience to deal with the trolls and their stupid comments. You Harry are a better man then I am and I applaud you for it.

Right now I am getting ready to move to our BOL so you may not hear from me for about a month but I'll be back on line when the last dish & pot and all my preps are safely stored away and I can again feel that we have at least a fighting chance of making it through the coming attractions of SHTF Talk to you later and keep up athe good work.

    1. Mallardhen, I feel like my blog keeps me in touch with like minded souls, and because I live a pretty isolated existence here, it gives me some contact with other people I like. (and sometimes, people I don't like but the variety is refreshing in a way). I look forward to when you get established at the BOL and are all set up. If you want to write a guest post about it I'll publish it here as I'm sure everybody would be interested.

    2. mallharden - Harry is right! there are many of us who would like to read about your adventures in setting up and moving to your BOL. we moved to ours in 2010 and started blogging about it. we had learned much from people like Harry and it is a real adventure to move to your blog for real. people talk about it but very few actually do it. i would love to learn more about your adventure!

  8. G'day Harry,

I feel left out, I've never had a troll reply to one of my comments! Probably right about them coming from Europe of the UK, I'm afraid they are fast approaching their "twilight years" as their populations steadily decline to be replaced by ever more "refugees" and immigrants from the middle east. I thank God that my ancestors, two brothers working as farm labourers made the decision to risk everything and emigrate to the then colony of New South Wales in 1837, along with their families.

Is it still cold in the mountains? because it is flaming WET down here!! It has been pouring on and off for a week now and everything is just a sodden mess at our place. The creek out front of the house almost burst it's banks and the back of the house flooded twice, I am very eager for some nice cold dry weather to start drying everything out.

    1. Well, when people leave a comment, you can click on their web names, and it takes you to their profile. If the profile has an email address, and my "liebchen trollein" is mad at you, stand by for heavy rolls. Sometimes, as when she gets on me about being old, I'm amused. But sometimes, when it's all gutter language, especially coming from a woman, it's repulsive.

Europe has the same problem we do. We get all these illegals from Mexico, Central America, and South America. If you are well educated, well off financially, and integrated into your own society, you don't go bumming into someone elses' county. So we aren't getting the useful people, we're getting the bottom rung of the ladder types who just don't have much, if anything, to offer our society. So, they camp out on welfare and public assistance. But somebody has to pay for that, and the somebody is the middle class. Poor folks don't pay taxes, and rich folks can hire good accountants to get them out of the majority of their taxes. As the middle class declines, (and it certainly is, here in this country anyway) fewer and fewer are supporting more and more. Nobody has to be a mathematician to see where it will end.

I saw those two "Australians" got shot in Indonesia for smuggling heroin. I am not sure how Australians got names like Krisnadongdamaranai and Abuakbarkisassee, or whoever the hell they were, but I would guess immigration played a part. Personally, I don't have a problem with executing dope smugglers, but then that's just me. ;-)

I hope the water doesn't start soaking through your foundation and getting into the house, that would be the last straw.

  9. Sorry about your troll. Sounds like she could use some lithium. Guess it's a good thing I'm anonymous...I'm sure some of my commentary causes her great consternation. I'm so happy about doing my part!

For the most part, I have enjoyed Matthew Bracken's books. Some better than others. The essay you posted is a good one, I think it came from "The Bracken Anthologies", a very good series of essays on different topics. if you liked that last one, you and your readers will like the anthologies. I got mine free on kindle, not sure if it still is.--Troy

    1. Stangely, it's Michael, Commander Zero and Kymber she's really got a stick in her throat about. I don't see what she got mad at Zero for, I read his comment and it didn't seem like the kind of thing she goes off on. But it might be the "Commander" in his web name. Left wing triffles don't care much for anything military.

One of my Canadian friends sent me that link, and I enjoyed reading it. I thought it made a lot of sense. I'll have to look for the Bracken Anthologies. Especially if I can get it free on Kindle.

  10. Spam is so annoying. I have my comments get approved by me before they get posted. Before I did that a spammer kept commenting, copied my blog, and blogger shut me down for a few days. They couldn't tell who the rightful owner was. Now I'm extra careful about comments.

    1. I wonder how they copied your blog? That would be pretty awful, like those viruses that get on your email address book and send out vulgar emails to all the people under your name. That happened to my brother, and even my mom got this really nasty email that looked like it was from him. Very embarrassing.

I have all my comments "moderated" now. I hate doing it, because I think it detracts from the spontaneity of the on line conversation, but I had to because of some "special education" folks in Europe who take umbrage at my political points of view. They ride the short bus.

  11. Hey Harry,

    (captaincrunch)

'Harry you are a cup overflowing with human goodness and kindness.

Now before you think I'm nuts lets look at the facts.

You Rescue Ferrets, Dogs, and Chickens that need heaters in the winter. You also take care of cats and whatever kind of critters your kids deposit on your doorstep.

You know how evil humans can be and your not afraid to confront it.

I'd say your one of the best people I know.

I bet those bad people that send you bad stuff probably 'twist the heads off kittens' while watching video's of Hitler's speeches at Nuremburg.

  12. Hey Harry,

    (captaincrunch)

    Radio Drama!

I picked up a Cobra 29LTD cb radio off of craigslist for 40 bucks. I thought the mike was not working correctly so a friend of mine gave me a mike. The same problem reoccurred and that was the meter on the left of the radio would not move. I got disgusted and gave up working on it and moved onto other projects.

My friend called last night and I told him what was wrong and he ask me what I was doing and where I had the antenna. I told him the antenna was leaning up against the cab of the truck (grounding out the antenna) he said "Bingo" that's your problem.
    I grounded out the antenna.

I will work on the radio again later today.

I am still looking at 10 meter radio's also handle regular CB frequencies. I have no desire to be a radio guru or ham. I just want back up communications in case regular means goes out during hurricanes or other emergencies.

    1. Sunday I was sitting out on my little balcony/ porch at the apartment over the shop. It has a great view of the mountains. I had one of my smaller shortwave sets, but it has SSB and a clarifier. I picked up some hams talking and got a kick out of listening to them. They were talking about the circus up in Baltimore, and they made me look like a left wing philosopher. These guys were harsh, but everything they said made perfect sense. Especially their solution to the problem, which , for their sakes and mine, I won't put on the blog.

It's good you are getting all your gear squared away. I need to do that but so far I have been letting repairs to my CB system just kind of idle. I need a new 20 foot whip, and I need a new microphone. My beautiful Double Eagle mike gave up the ghost after more than 20 years of perfect service.

  13. I think it all started after you commented on my blog, as happened to Michael and some others who commented on my blog at the time (june 2014) when we had the war here.Since than we are all being attacked by the same person. They also called me "old granny"|).

    1. Yeah, I think I incurred the wrath of the pea brains over at your place. But that's not your fault, and they really don't bother me. Besides, while they are concentrating on me they can't mess with people who it really might bother.

I think you and I may be about the same age. I want to hear about your time in the Israeli Army when you get to feeling like doing a post on it. There are pictures in our news of Israeli Army girls now and then, and they give the impression that all the women in Israel are beautiful!

We may be old now, Yael, but we ain't dead! Life is good.

    2. I think i am older than you Harry, I used to cheat about my age but not any more:) may be i shall post a picture of me while in my army service. i was quiet nice than but it was long long time ago.

    3. I'm going on 63. The troll doesn't bother me. In fact, sometimes I get a real kick out of her comments. It's mainly her side kicks that are disappointing, nothing clever about what they say, just potty mouth. But sometimes S.M. is entertaining. I like that she reads my posts carefully and tries to think of subtle ways to annoy me. In a way, it's a compliment.

I look forward to seeing your picture from when you were in the Israeli army. There are two pictures of me in Lebanon in 1982 and 1983 on my side bar if you scroll down. I am old now, of course, but it happens to us all if we live long enough. ;-)

    4. I was beginning to feel left out as I had not heard from the troll for a while, but sure enough on my most recent post the pathetic P.O.S sent a very telling and rather twisted comment about life not having meaning without death thus revealing just how meaningless her own existence is. So much, that she spends her time and effort perusing the blogs of people she openly despises just to scribble hateful messages and so attain some level of gratification.

    1. Probably a book would be a better format. In the movie, they tried to tell the story of the hike and the story of her previous life by interspersing scenes from both. I did not find the depictions of her using drugs or being involved in prostitution very edifying. I did like the parts about the hike, though.

I can't imagine what anyone would find to attack you for on your blog. It's very interesting but it isn't in any way controversial. I imagine someone got jealous of your success.
