It's a big world out there.

Jonathan Harris Painting
Thunderstorms since early morning.  Rains for awhile, with thunder rolling. Then lets up, and repeats the cycle every half hour or so.  We need the rain, so I am not complaining.

Took the Cherokee in this morning for a maintenance check . Needed the fan belt rollers tightened and after the epic journey to the mother in laws on the other side of the mountains, I wanted the brakes checked.

We bought this vehicle in 2000. It as a 1999 someone bought, then croaked and the family traded it in.

It's got over 200,000 on it now.  I had a Grand Wagoner that I drove for 16 years. Of course, I put a new engine and transmission in it, but what a stalwart that vehicle was.

I always buy Jeeps. Getting time to think about getting another one here soon.

While we are embroiled in internal politics, things are getting very dicey in the South China Sea. If there's a big blow up internationally, it will be there. Not the Ukraine, or Venezuela.  We are involved in it because Japan is our ally, and they are up to their necks in the problem. While the Chinese try to grab large swaths of sea space illegally, nobody has done anything to stop them.

Did you notice Obama went to Vietnam and agreed to sell them weapons? That's to counter balance Chinese expansionist plans. But he is playing a dangerous game.  Just how dangerous (and how repetitious ) this is, you can easily see if you can get a copy of this book. I think it's out of print now but probably available through inter library loan.

You'll learn a lot you didn't know. I did.  For instance, Jimmy Carter sent a delegation to Vietnam right after he was sworn in. His instructions were to get the missing in action declared dead so the Military could quit carrying them on the payroll, and they would not be a political embarrassment to him.

Another fun fact is that Carter had to choose between the U.S. recognizing a Vietnamese backed provisional government for Cambodia, or he had to recognize Pol Pot's regime, although he knew for a fact that genocide was going on there. To avoid offending China, the State Department wanted to recognize the Pol Pot crew.  Carter went along with the program, and the U.S. facilitated the establishment of the Pol Pot government in the U.N. and let them set up an embassy in the U.S.

Remember when the Chinese fighter rammed a U.S. P3 aircraft over the disputed area?  We were all told that the Chinese were so kind and helpful to the crew of the aircraft when it made a forced landing in Chinese territory.  Now, 16 years later, it's a forgotten incident. But if you read the memoirs of the pilot in command, what we were told was clearly not what happened.

Again, the book is out of print, but copies can be found. He went to flight school about 25 years after I did, and I was interested in the changes between his experience and mine. But for people not interested in that, you can skip about half the book and just read the parts that apply to the actual collision and aftermath.

Each chapter is delineated with a time identifier so it's easy to skip over  what you aren't interested in.

I had been out of the service about  14 years when all that happened, and I remember thinking that either the press was blowing smoke up everyone's rear, or the Chinese had done a miraculous makeover in a very short time.

If we keep sending reconnaissance aircraft over those man made islands, something similar is going to happen. Especially since the Chinese will be miffed about the arms deal with Viet Nam, and they know Obama is a coward and an idiot.  It's a bad idea to tweak the dragons tail when he thinks you are a paper tiger.

Upon reflection, I realized that if we make the Chinese mad enough, they don't have to use their nuclear arsenal or their huge military. They can just cash in the U.S. Government paper they are holding. Overnight we'd be in the next Great Depression.

As for events here,  Black Jesus is calling for the reinstatement of the Clinton gun ban. I lived under that for ten years. If there is another one, it will last longer than I will.  Meanwhile, the government will employ it's legions of security drones to stamp out Americans who don't comply, while the Islamo fascists work their way down through the different levels of society, whacking citizens left and right.  I know there are some really stupid people in the country, but the latest polls indicate they comprise more than half of the population.  Where is Pol Pot when you really need him?

Have you noticed that the dialog about the terrorist attack in Orlando is now about "guns" and not about the spectacular failure of the U.S. intelligence community.  MSN is now telling people that he shooter was "gay" and that this was not a terrorist event, but related to sexual identity problems. It's called " deflecting criticism of the bumbling government."

Interesting that the "pressure cooker bombers" in Baltimore had been under surveillance
but the FBI decided they were harmless. Russian intelligence warned us that the two brothers had been trained in terrorist camps in Chechnya, but our savvy intelligence community ignored that.  When the older brother was a suspect in the knife killings of a Jewish woman and her three kids, he walked "for lack of evidence."

The Chattanooga shooter was on the skyline with the FBI, but professionals that they are, they decided he was all talk.  The San Bernadino terrorists had been reported as suspicious (not by their neighbors, who were afraid of being branded racists), but the FBI gave them a cursory glance and said "nyaee".  Nidal Hassan was investigated a number of times, identified as a threat, and no action was taken because he was Moslem. Too many careers might be threatened by taking any action against a Moslem. Better to wait til he actually kills a bunch of people and do something then. So they left him alone and he killed a bunch of people at Fort Hood.  But nobody lost their jobs over that.

And yet, there are still people out there who believe their personal protection is not their worry. The government and the alphabet agencies will take care of them.   Good luck with that. But then again, it's a way to purge the gene pool, if you are a Darwinian.

There are some people we just don't need in the gene pool.

Thought for the day.

  1. Yes and now the Obama Admin wants to use National Security as New Excuse to Go After Guns: DHS to Take Charge. Yes and DHS does such a wonderful job with the TSA I'm sure this will work out.

    1. The whole thing kind of reminds me of the famous silent movie with Charlie Chaplin, "The Great Dictator." There'd be lots of laughs at the ridiculous antics of our supposed leadership today if it wasn't so terrifying at the same time. I am not prepared to put my life or the lives of my family at risk by relying on incompetent cretins for their safety.

  2. I keep wondering if there will be a rash of attacks and Obama will use the excuse to declare martial law before the election, or at least before any new president is sworn in.

    1. I don't think the guy has the stones to try that. He's a moral and physical coward. He's great a nickle and dime stuff, but a declaration of martial law would be more than he dared I believe. I noted, however, that he dragged the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff into his little photo op yesterday. That seem strangely out of place to me.

  3. Hey Harry,

    same stuff, different day.

gun bans, blame the guns, gay muslims with problems.

I know its a load of crap.

I really hope the chinease just dump the bonds and throw a wrench into the economy and soon, that way Obama can take the heat.
I also think the chinease are taking what they can now before Trump gets in office because Trump wont put up with that shit.

Its just one big global mess with bad guys like the Saudi's pulling the strings behind the scenes. Obama is just an animated puppet.

Speaking of gay muslims. Jimmy Carter has Cancer now and I hope its painful.

    1. Last I heard, Peanut Man Carter had announced he had cancer, then a few weeks later he stood up in church and said he had been miraculously cured by Jesus and was cancer free. If it has come back you won't see me shedding any tears. I detest the guy.

If the Chinese cash in their paper, we'll all be eating pork and beans and living under the overpass in a cardboard refrigerator box. I'm too old for that, man. They can cause either a default (end of game for us) or rampant inflation (end of game for us) any time they want to. It's a frightening thought.

I don't think the machine will let Trump anywhere near the White House. Ryan and his tools can keep their same old system if Shrillery wins. She's one of the boys. Trump is a real, honest to God outsider. No politician, of whatever stripe, wants to see him come in there and start doing business outside their accepted methodology.

I think we are basically screwed. I have been touching base with some friends and making sure they are still on for a little vacation in the mountains, and that they have everything ready to bring up they want to bring up. I believe life in the United States is about to get a whole lot more interesting.

  4. Did you read where the Obama administration just ran another load of guns past the border for the middle east? Of course, the Mex cartels got their share. Big stuff, missiles. Drones make good targets. How is Jet?

    1. Jet is not having a high quality of life but he's not in pain. Still mostly sleeping.

Yes, and the "share the load" for "transportation and looking the other way" system is still alive and well. We let dubious characters move our shipments in exchange for a piece of the action, and they later sell the stuff to people who use it to shoot down our helicopters in some God forsaken Third World hell hole. We just never seem to learn.

    1. I'm safe enough up here as long as I stay out of the sun. And off the roof.

I really think it is just sheer, unadulterated "cover your ass" politics and unprofessionalism in the upper ranks of our intelligence community. Everybody likes to dump on the memory of Herbert Hoover, but this B.S. with the Islamic Terrorists prancing around and having a hay day whacking Americans while the government does nothing would not have happened under his leadership. But today The FBI and the Justice Department are led (and I use the term loosely) by political hacks who have no interest in anything but hanging on to their mahogany desks and genuflecting for Black Jesus every time he breaks wind.

  6. if over 50 per cent of people are too stupid to tie their own shoelaces, then the tipping point has been reached and the rest of us, i hope, will somehow be protected by God, and will find places of true refuge--other than our graves.
God protect us and our children!

    1. Right now, the polls (both red and blue) indicate that just over 50% of Americans are satisfied with the job the government is doing with security. I am waiting with great interest to see if this latest debacle makes any significant changes, but I am not holding my breath.

  7. I wonder why terrorist haven't targeted a Bean Southern Gun show???? It has my wife asking about prepps and ammo we have.

Harry I disagree on same shit different day. Back then King's lead men in battle and had courage and convictions. Today's leader's cower and cant decide on what's for dinner. The problem has always been Islamic intolerance.

    1. But the guys in the trenches, so to speak, were fighting the same enemy. I often wonder, when thinking about the program "Vikings" that when the show has Ragnar and his merry band attacking Paris, the French had already been fighting Islam for more than 100 years.

During the Crusades, they had their share of big time screw ups because when the kings and Emperors got involved, politics got involved. The Crusades that were led by Normans looking to carve out new kingdoms for themselves went the best.

As you point out, these guys don't mess with people who can fight back. They like nice flocks of Sheeple, so they can run up big body counts.

  8. Everybody is overlooking this. I think if you have someone "in charge" say something on TV and then you get the news media to repeat it, everyone just believes it. Most don't look into anything, don't research or even take the events apart to see what the bottom line is. Guns??? No, it could have been a bomb, it could have been knives, swords, etc. And--- WHY didn't anyone DO anything. All those people in one place against one person and nobody hit him, rushed him and brought him down? Sure, someone would get hurt or killed but maybe many more would have survived or been unharmed.

    1. A lot of people in America today lack the capacity for independent thought. Not so much because they lack the capability, but because they have been taught from childhood to do as they are told, and accept what they are told. It's a shame, but it's true.

Yesterday, though it got little coverage, an Islamic Terrorist in France went to the home of a couple who were both police officers. He went in with a knife, killed the man, then held the woman hostage. When the police broke in, he stabbed the woman to death. The French killed him, but he had already murdered two people and he streamed the whole thing live on facebook. That hasn't gotten much coverage in the U.S. because it highlights exactly what you said. This is not about guns, it's about terrorists. But blaming guns is the cheap and easy way out for Obama and his Legion of the Lost.

I told my wife my classroom of 5th graders had more people with more courage in it than that crowd in the club. What can I say? I'd rather get shot trying to stab the guy in the eye with a cocktail olive toothpick than just lay down get shot in the back. Apparently the people in the club did not feel that way.

It didn't take long for the shooting to become political. Same people saying the same things.

    1. I have been watching the Chinese territorial claim thing with growing unease. We are really messing with the bull there. If we make them mad enough, they can really stick it to us through our economy. Probably the only thing saving us is that they still need us to buy their cheap products, but they are still communists, not capitalists. I hope we don't push them too far. At my age, I have no desire to be scrounging through the garbage bins behind restaurants.

  10. We just bought a Subaru Outback this year to replace our Honda Pilot. The Pilot was 13 years old I think. The air conditioning kept going out. They couldn't figure out why. A few major things were wrong with it, so we thought it was time. We've had our Civic for 11 years, so it's getting up there to.

We've had guns for a long time, but it's just the last 20 or so years that people have had major problems with them - so it seems. 911 happened. What are they going to do? Take planes away? I don't know what the answers are. I don't think taking guns away is going to solve all our problems. If someone is crazy in the head, they don't have a gun, they'll find another way to kill. There are homemade bombs, and all kinds of ways to kill people.

    1. You,most of the other people who come here, and I, and a lot of other common sense people, have been saying that ad nauseum, but it's a vain hope that Obama and his followers will pay any attention. It doesn't serve their ulterior motives to do so.

The answer is to stop illegal immigration so we at least have some idea who we are letting in the country. Then we need to obliterate the nests of Islamic Terrorism overseas, which we could do. Finally we need to start shutting down mosques where the Imam pimps for ISIS, Al Qaeda or their ilk. These things wouldn't stop Islamic terrorism overnight but it would be a good start. Bringing more of them in here and disarming the part of the population willing to fight back , in Left Think, is the solution. Hasn't worked yet.

  11. It's interesting that people are in such an uproar because nothing was done after sandy hook, and suddenly this shooting was the result of the government inaction. So a lot of people are calling for bans, common sense control, etc. My question to all of them is 'what now?'. There is a ban, what now? What about all the weapons already in circulation. What about pistols with 19 round magazines? 15? 7? Who needs a revolver that can hold 5 or 6 rounds, clearly those aren't for hunting purposes, etc.
A lot of silence follows because they don't want to say confiscation or registration but damn sure are thinking of it.

    1. They are. Obama repeatedly whines about "civilized countries" banning firearms, and touts England and Australia as shining beacons of light. There's nothing Clinton, Obama and their entourage of butt busers would like better.

But they don't take into account that waving their pen at a piece of paper, and getting it done, are two different things. I will be utterly damned before I bend the
knee to any Demagogue espousing gun confiscation, or registration. I think a lot of others feel the same way.

  12. We have my grandparents' old jeep. It's a 94 but they only drove it around town so it just had like 104k on it. We had to do a little work on it initially but it's doing well now and it is really great on our road when it snows.

    1. The older vehicles were better built then than they are now. You are fortunate to have that 94. I imagine it does come in handy when things go snowy.
