Sunday

The wind is really blowing here today, and it's cold outside.  The weather forecast said sunshine, but it's heavy clouds at the moment. Maybe they are all supposed to blow away.  The prognosis for Christmas Day is snow here, but it's still ten days away and my guess is the weather forecast will change ten times in that period. Predicting the weather in the mountains seems to be fairly difficult because they don't get it right often.

One of my dogs brought home what was left of a deer somebody field dressed.  I tried to take it away from her, because I don't want her to start getting a taste for deer. Couldn't catch her though. I just hope she doesn't swallow a bone splinter.

I bought this book on Kindle for 99 cents.  There are all kinds of survivalist lists on the internet,  and I think this fellow laboriously went through most of them, then prioritized what he found there and made his own list up.  That's fine with me,  I'm always curious to see what other people think the essentials are.

As far as I can tell, the book is only available on Kindle.

The best book I ever found on this was the Mormon version, but you never can tell what you might glean from a new book.  All I need is one new thought from this one and I've more than justified the dollar I spent on it.

If nothing else, it will make an interesting read some evening when I haven't got anything else to do. Those nights come along fairly frequently now that it gets dark so early.

Unless something unforeseen happens today I'm just staying at home.  I don't need anything from town and it's too cold to be out in the wind without a good reason.

  1. I seriously need to look into a tablet that allows me to do both Kindle and Nook to my own satisfaction. Or maybe just get one of each.

    Enjoy your Sunday!!!

    1. I'm mad because I paid $250 for my Kindle HD a year ago, and now they are selling an improved version with better resolution for a hundred dollars less.

  2. Harry - stay in and stay warm, my friend. we are having a bit of a snow day today - we're expecting 15 to 20cms of snow. it's really pretty though. your story about your dog finding the deer reminded me of my favourite dog, Willie. he found (read stold) a full deer leg that someone must have been curing in their barn or something and he got it. he brought it home and banged it off our barn and the side of the house. my father took it from him and buried it about a mile in the woods. Willie found it again, dug it up again and kept playing with it. my father tried burying it 2 more times and Willie kept finding it. we let him play with it during the winter as it frozen but as soon as it started thawing my father took the leg to our next town's dump. that dog was so funny!

PP - for Christmas me and jam are getting a tablet to share. we are getting the Aces Transformer Book T100. it is a Windows 8 tablet and it allows you to go to both Kindle and Nook. check it out.

anyway Harry - thanks for sharing this book. i am like you, i'll read anything to glean even one new piece of information!

have a good wind day while we have a good snow day! your friend,

    1. Kymber,
My biggest concern is the bone fragment thing. I can't see how wolves and other wild canine related animals can eat bones, but when a domesticated dog does he often winds up in surgery for a perforated intestine. Also, I don't want mine "running" deer because somebody will shoot them. That old dog you had was quite a character. A lot of them are that way, just as individualistic as people are.

Maybe that Transformer is the thing PP needs. He was looking for something that would do Nook and Kindle.

Stay inside and stay warm, you two.

  3. Harry to make you fell better its 1 here. Staying in and staying warm today. We have like 6 laptops and a couple of desk tops. Not into tablets. I do have Kindle reader on my laptop. We found out yesterday that our oldest son is coming home for Christmas, until New Years Day.

    1. Rob, it's not that cold here but it sure feels that way when you go outside. I have Kindle Reader on the laptop I have, and it's handy. The thing I wish I knew how to do is download my magazines that I get on Kindle to the computer. I know there is a way to do it but I have been lazy and not researched it. Calling Amazon Help is too hard, you mainly get people from India who have trouble with questions not on their script. I'm glad to hear your son is coming home, that will make Christmas have some meaning.

  4. Based on my reading of post-apoc literature, the key item to have on hand is a Navy SEAL nephew who is willing to help you out.

    1. Alas , none of my nephews make the grade on that one. They're good guys but no one in the family has those qualifications. ;-)

  5. Boy you really know how to spoil a dogs fun.
It's only cooked bones that splinter and cause problems for dogs. Raw hide chews are also bad. Raw bones are great for dogs and recommended by vets. Look up the B.A.R.F. (Bones And Raw Food) diet. A lot of people are curing their dogs health problems with it. Our dogs eat raw bones all the time no problem, and have great teeth to show for it.

    1. That's good to know. I had a dog get a turkey bone once with dire results, and I was afraid that any kind of bone other than beef bones might be bad for them. But that didn't make a lot of sense because I know predators in the wild don't have issues like that. Thanks, Kimberly. That's one less thing I have to worry about!

  6. Harry,

    (captaincrunch)

What does one do when the dog returns with a 'Zombified' (zombie) still moving human hand????

I guess I've seen too many episodes of "The Walking Dead" (on a side note, the TV show does have a pretty good survivalist theme and it seems that the writers have done some homework, except for the part where modern day gasoline is still good after two years sitting with out any treatment)

    1. I have the first season on DVD but I haven't watched it. I tried to watch I AM LEGEND for about the tenth time and turned it off ten minutes into it like l always do. Don't have any idea why.

  7. I was out quite a bit yesterday, and the wind was really biting on the hands (even with gloves) and face.

My dog brought home some deer remains this week too. I worry more about worms from it than bone splinters. I have heard they only get bone splinters from meat that has been cooked - if it is raw the bone isn't likely to splinter?

    1. vet says wild + raw = worms.
      keep worming outside critters.

    2. Kimberly lives on a farm and she says bone splinters are not a problem if the bones haven't been cooked which makes sense to me. I always cook any meat really well, game or domestic for fear of worms and other nastiness. I even cook eggs really well done.

  8. It's warming up today, but then getting cold again.

I don't have a Kindle, but our school is talking about getting online books for the students to save money. There is a few issues. Some rent the books, while others sell them. The standards of cost are different from company to company. Then on many of the books there are not page numbers. Trying to tell the students to read this amount of pages is hard to do. I hope they get it straightened out. I think it would be good to have them save.

    1. There was a school in downtown Atlanta that got a federal grant and got their kids laptops. Inside of three months virtually all were broken, stolen, traded for drugs, etc. I would not want to sign for or be accountable for equipment like that.
