Another storm and missing comments.

This should be an interesting one.  Started with freezing rain,  snowing now.  I ought to have some good new pictures of the snow to post once this moves through.  Until then,  I hope everybody here rides it out ok.

I know everyone is tired of my "I hate blogger" spiel, but I hate blogger.

I got several emails from people who come by here a lot, who are good friends, asking why I deleted their comments. I never do that, and I don't know what happened to the missing comments. Please try to repost them and let me know if they are not going through. I haven't fiddled with the comments section of the template or anything.

I also got a comment telling me a previous comment wasn't there anymore!  I sure didn't have anything to do with that. I like the comments and they are a big part of why I write the blog, so it is infuriating when something like this happens. Almost , or maybe even more, maddening than the last go around with the phantom advertisements that were popping up on the blog.

  1. I have heard about this extreme cold storm heading your way, it is on our radio and television news.

    Please stay safe.

    1. Tania, it is going to be tough even for the mountains. Sub zero temps here tonight and we usually don't have to cope with that. But I have checked everything that needs to be checked. The animals are all safely situated, we have plenty of supplies, and if the power goes out I have the generator all fueled, tested , and ready to go. My big worry is that it will snow like the devil, then melt just a little, then freeze up. If that happens it will be a while before my wife can get out to go to school. Right now school has been cancelled so it doesn't matter. My wife had one good day of driving weather, yesterday, and made it all the way home from Cincinnati so that worked out , at least.

    2. n.e. ohio went above freezing here today and even now 9 p.m. is 38 but raining madly. tomorrow 7 degrees predicted high. ice ice ice glad i don't have to go out in it.
this up and down weather is the ice maker. if it stays cold and just snows it is much safer.

  2. Harry I suspect my comment was eaten due to my own impatience. I was needing to go out and check things and didn't wait for blogger to update before closing the window. Blogger was running very slow yesterday so I am sure that's what happened. I only mentioned it because I didn't want ya to think I didn't comment or was not reading your posts.

    1. PP, that may be it but I had three other folks asking about theirs. I checked the spam filter thing on the template, and I had an ungodly number of spams, but those weren't in there. I have noticed some quirks with blogger lately, I think Google is screwing around with it again.

  3. Still in extreme survival mode here. My area is saying -40 degree wind chills and I can attest since I was just out in it again that exposed skin will immediately start to hurt now.

It's everything I can do to keep the inside temperature above 60 degrees. 65 was about all I could do during the day time and since the sun went down look out. Supposedly we have another 20 degrees worth of drop before sunrise.

Gonna be a long night and I will be surprised if there are no people casualties from this storm. If my wood furnace can't heat the house I suspect there are many electric and propane driven ones that are really lacking around here.

This is the worst freeze I ever remember.

    1. We are still having rain and wind here, the radar shows the front just to the West and coming on. If the temps drop down to what they are predicting, it will be the coldest I have ever seen it here, even colder than it used to get in the 80's. I have all the normal cold weather procedures in place, but I don't really know what to expect from sub zero weather such as they are predicting. I feel like I ought to be preparing a hot air balloon capsule so that just as we all freeze to death, the ferrets can escape and float down to Florida. Like Superman.

  4. Don't over do it on the shoveling. Toss a few logs on the fire and have a hot beverage (cocoa, tea, coffee, soup) and stay indoors.

    1. Rob, I don't shovel snow. It's pretty pointless, since to do any good I'd have to shovel all the way down the mountain. I just wait inside til it melts.

    1. No need. They have a massive, thick house built out of bails of hay under an eve of the barn. It has an entry hole just big enough for them to squeeze through. They are well insulated and warm, protected from the wind.

  6. my blogger has been acting wonky too. Please don't hurt yourself shoveling snow. I fear there are going to be many deaths with this extreme cold weather break out.
Even down here the "feel like" temp is suppose to be around 5 degrees Tuesday morning. Stay warm !

    1. Maybe it's google then. They get on there and mess around with different features, and it causes unintended consequences. It's like they use the whole blogger community as a beta testing group. Worse, they don't warn you that they are doing it so you don't know what the issue is. Then you go to their "help" page, which is no help at all, and a day or two later they have some lame comment up about "minor issues."

I'm not a snow shoveler so should be ok there. I make a path to the barn and shop just by trudging through the snow. We haven't had that much snow, enough to cover everything but I've seen a lot worse. It' the horrific cold. I tried to unlock the shop door this morning to feed the cat in there and the door lock was frozen. I had to get a hair dryer, plug it into an extension cord, and heat the lock to get in. Temp outside right now is about 12 degrees and the wind is blowing.

    2. I KEEP THE LOCK DEICER FROM THE AUTO SUPPLY IN MY POCKET ALL WINTER. DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE TOO MUCH ICE ON YOUR LOCKS FOR IT. IT IS CONVENIENT.

  7. It's cold where I'm at. -40 degrees. Schools are closed tomorrow. I think because buses would have trouble starting up.

Comments - I sometimes get some collecting in the junk folder. One blogger's comments used to always publish for I me, then they went into junk. Blogger saw them as spam. I have no clue why. In the comment section, check your junk folder. You can choose to publish them, or delete them.

  8. Alissa, schools are closed across the top of the state here because the roads are icy and also because people would drop their kids off at bus stops in sub zero weather and just drive off and leave them. The lack of concern and or intelligence on the part of some parents is mind boggling.

I checked the comments section of the template as you suggested, and didn't find anything there except some spam. I don't know what's going on but with blogger it's always something. Aggravating.

  9. Yes, it's moving in. They have closed our schools for tomorrow. Virginia just isn't used to these temps, and when you think about it, many of the disadvantaged kids don't have adequate jackets/gloves/hats for -25* wind chills at the bus stop.
That's so odd about your comment issues. I sometimes accidentally delete a comment on my phone - the delete button is right next to publish and it's so tiny I sometimes hit the wrong one. Fortunately, it doesn't happen often - I always feel so guilty.

    1. I think it may be related to me using Windows 8. It is very different from anything I have ever seen before. The computer makes lots of changes to things I use without asking me. Very frustrating.

Today it was so cold I didn't think I was going to make it back from the gate, seriously. I have to go out to do the chores and I got this idea to go down and see what the forest service road by the gate was like snow wise. Not a good impromptu decision.

    2. we were looking for a new computer but all have windows 8 which we have been warned against. looking for a decent used one with windows 7. neither of us are in any way technical so we would never conquer a new system.
the engineers seem like they get a kick out of thinking how much agony they can cause in the computer buying public.

  10. Your picture reminds me of mountain running. I would always see the largest ravens hanging around and I always told them I'm not dead yet.
I picked up a heavy duty push broom on Saturday, for the first time ever our concrete path is clear, much better than shoveling. Doesn't do so hot on gravel.

    1. Hey, Kelly. I never quite got the hang of the following function, so I am not sure quite how it works but I'm glad to see you. I bet you wind up taking them in the house, it is going to be ferociously cold.
