Of Screeds and Polemics.

Truly massive thunderstorms coming through again tonight.  If this doesn't get us out of drought conditions, nothing will.  Most of last night I had everything electric shut down, as the power was going in and out the whole time.  Tonight the power has settled down. I guess all the trees that were ready to go over went in the previous storm.

Slate magazine had a charming article entitled "Republicans no longer pander to White Southerners."  Another article in a NY magazine exulted in the downfall of "Southern White Culture" and expressed the opinion that white people in general but especially Southerners were an impediment on the road to the great socialist future where minorities would rule and historical oppressors (i.e. white people) would learn the meaning of living under the boot heel.

. Now here's the odd part, lots of people wrote in praising the article and claiming they were white. Kind of like that woman who made herself up to look black and became a rising star in the NAACP. Til they found out she was white....

Some piss ant newspaper in Ohio proclaimed that anyone who flies the Southern Battle Flag is a "traitor" and should be extirpated as such. That's just a sampling of the impressive thought processes of the leftards. I eventually got tired of reading them. When all the smoke and dust clears, the people like the Governors of Alabama and South Carolina, the appeasers and their ilk, will have at least been exposed.  Our monuments may be defaced, our cemeteries desecrated, but I think Southern resolve will be hardened.

I noticed there was a counter demonstration down in Charleston, 10 guys with Confederate battle flags who were immediately attacked by a mob of 30 or more "African Americans." They put up a good fight, but strangely enough, the only people arrested for "disorderly conduct" were from the group of 10. The video clearly shows them to have been defensive, but I guess you can't get in trouble for arresting white people, unlike what happens when you arrest a black person. And after all, that shows the black folks the police are of "the right party."

If I sound angry, I am. But I'm trying to be philosophical about it.

I can't convince the leftards and their minions they are wrong about us. Nor would I take the trouble to do so if I could.

The thing to do is just acknowledge that you have enemies, and take it in stride.

Here's a book you need to go with your shortwave:

If you have a shortwave for emergency situations, this is the book you need.  It lists, by day and time, most of the regular transmitting stations you could hope to pick up, from national radio outfits to the crazy preacher ranting in his barn.  If there's no television, no internet, you may be hard put to get news and that will be the one thing you really need, because you can't store it and you need it to be fresh all the time.  Maybe brother Nathaniel transmitting in his little barn radio station can't tell you much about world events but he can tell you what's happening in his location, and that might be important.  The only downside of this book is it lists EVERYTHING, in every language under the sun, so you have to tediously go through it looking for English broadcasts.

It costs about 5 bucks in digital edition, and you can print the sections you want in hard copy if you have no way of powering your digital device.  With a little prior planning you can power something like a laptop or tablet using a solar panel specially designed for that, but printing is always an option if you can afford the $38.00 cartridges.

I have been told of a movie called Collapse that looks good. It was another of those that was privately financed, came out in 2013 and was never in general release. You can buy copies on E Bay for $12.00 plus $2.00 S&H.  I found a trailer, couldn't embed it, but here's the link.

Collapse Trailer.

I should mention that there are an awful lot of movies called "Collapse" so you have to be careful you are getting the movie about the two kids and TEOTWAWKI if you order a copy.

Had lunch with a doctor who is a former Army LRRP dog handler.  The guy is a Viet Nam vet, about two years older than me.  I was impressed.  Neither of us are "joiners" but we agreed to cooperate in so far as possible when it happens.  Once I get my good base unit back into operation I am pretty sure we can communicate on SSB.  If nothing else, I am building a network of like minded souls in my immediate vacinity and that's heartening. The more people you cautiously communicate with, the more you learn are survivalists. People are discrete, but as the country slides further into the abyss more and more people are tentatively putting out feelers.

  1. Its safer to arrest whites now days....Harry would it be inappropriate for a Yankee to show support for the South and the Confederate flag, by adding it to my blog? I feel its an important part of out history. Sounds stupid I know.

  2. Doesn't sound at all stupid to me. It's a mind set, based on independence and states rights. Anyone can join the merry band that thinks that way.

  3. We shall see what, if anything, the South has left in terms of resolve. As silly as this sounds, I thing the business with the flag and NASCAR will stir things up as much as anything. Wait till the next races in the deep south are run in Atlanta and Talladega. I'd love a big empty stadium in Talladega, but will settle for a crowded stands full of nothing but the Confederate Flag.

Screw NASCAR! And after what Dale Jr said today about the Confederate flag, screw him too!

  4. I have been very surprised at some of the things people have said and done over this incident. The connection between our flag and this mentally ill individual rests solely on his having photographed himself with the flag. Trying to tie the two together based on that is so ludicrous that it's mind boggling. But it did give the haters a chance to attack anything and everything associated with the Southern region of the United States. I've put up with that kind of stupidity all my life but the extent and virulence displayed by so many has surprised even me. Taking the Dukes of Hazard off television, for instance. Removing the Confederate flag from video games about the Civil War. It's pathetic. You get the impression that a lot of these haters would be glad to set up death camps and solve the "problem" of white Southerners that way.
I think that this experience will motivate a lot of Southerners, as well as thinking people from all backgrounds.

  5. I haven't been out and about to hear what locals are saying about this flag insanity. Probably not much here. City people are too busy being city people. But you get further north into the forest area of my state, and I'll bet there are lots of folks who are pretty much in agreement with you. Those people are fiercely independent and likely to resist any and all government interference in their lives. And they are NASCAR fans. And each and every one owns at least one deer rifle. You don't want to mess with those boys. I'm related to a whole passel of them.

I am beginning to think that the powers that be are scared of you Southern folks. You all are independent and will not roll over and play dead when told to. So they try to bring you down any way they can. You all and my lumberjacks are a force to be reckoned with. There may still be hope.

    1. There's a passage in The Grapes of Wrath that echoes your sentiments. I don't have my copy near by tonight, but it went something like this. Some of the displaced Oklahomans were sitting around a camp fire at night. They were talking about a town where the dust bowl refugees had been very poorly treated, abused and disdained by the townspeople. So several hundred of them took their rifles and walked silently and solemnly down the main street of the town together. After that, none of the Oklahoman folks were mocked or beaten up by toughs in that town again.

Rural Southerners have always embodied traits that the federal Hivists hate, and it has nothing to do with slavery. Southern people are independent, like the folks you talked about in your post. They believe in local governmental self determination. They believe in self sufficiency, because if you depend on the federals you become their churls. The only government they are really comfortable with is county and state level. They know beyond that the will of the people means nothing, exactly as we see today.

I was really saddened when the Mayor of Boise hauled down the flag of Mississippi from a display of state flags there. I would expect such mean and petty behavior from New York city, but not from Idaho.

      Delete
    2. Apparently all are welcome in Boise.....unless you are from Mississippi. The Mississippi state flag has history behind it, as do each and every one of the state flags. To pull the Mississippi is just about as petty as you can get. And just plain wrong.

    3. My brother lives in Boise. He and his live in girlfriend are among the beautiful people, who live in gated communities and go to elegant social gatherings at the country club where they clink cocktail glasses and assure one another of their superiority and their devine right to rule. I would suspect that's the class the Mayor comes from. The ordinary, working people of the state would not have approved, I'm sure, but nobody asked them.

  7. The leftards never confront their opposition directly. They use surrogates, like the mob that assaulted the ten men in Charleston. They use the media, which edits video footage and carefully selects what interview gets aired and what perception is thus created. They pass laws that are unconstitutional and unjust, then use the FBI and BATF and all the other mechanisms of deadly force. But they never put themselves to any discomfort or risk. They don't have to, because as Lenin pointed out, every society has a surplus of "useful idiots."

I certainly share your sentiments. And I appreciate the signs of support, few though they may be, from folks like you in other parts of the country.

  8. Hey Harry,

    (captaincrunch)

On the Confederate flag and southern pride thing. This will only galvanize southerners to dig their heels and resist the tyranny of populist socialist thought.

As per the Mayor of Boise, Idaho. I'm not surprised with all the liberal California trash moving in Idaho and changing the demographics.

I'm not too upset about it because there is nothing I can do about it.

Soon the masses will have another crisis to entertain them. Maybe we will get lucky and our leaders start a war with Russia (that'll distract them)

We now live in a big brother, control freak state.

I just take comfort in knowing that the crazies are now in charge (sarcasm)

I gotta check out that radio book.

    1. I'm upset about it, and I feel more alienated from the thing that America has become than ever. But I take comfort in the certainty that this will reenergize rural Southerners and ultimately make Southern culture even stronger.

I also believe that all this turmoil and vitrole is further balkanizing the country and weakening us as whole, but I'm not going to placate the leftards and their tools by going quietly into the night, as the man said. That book is cheap and it's a must have if TEOTWAWKI comes some dark night.

    2. Hey Harry,'

      (captaincrunch)

I guess what I am trying to say as per America falling apart, southern culture being villinized and everything else is that I do care, but since their is nothing I can do about it, I don't let it bother me.

Here's another analogy on my way of thinking.

Remember Steve Mcqueen in "The Great Escape"

In the last scene he was recaptured and got sent to cooler (probably for eternity) Someone threw him his baseball glove and ball. He immediately starting throwing his ball against the wall with the same annoying 'defiant spirit' he had before, irritating the Nazi Guard at the end.

That's the my view of defiance. I am an irritating backwards southerner that refuses to give up my Confederate flag, culture and history of over two hundred years go placate a bunch of politically correct, trendy bastards on their (Temporary distraction) of hatred and bigotry.

"Just like a child with ADD. They will be off on another damn fool crusade to save Roaches from extinction due to global warming/climate change next"

Our culture, flag, and history will be around long after Walmart's, Amazon's and EBay's demise as corporations.

'Just by living, thriving, reproducing and keeping our spirit, culture, dialect and history alive, we are winning'

I cite the Basque Seperatist in Northern Spain as an example. A culture within a culture that's been in those mountains for thousands of years I believe. The Basque are keeping their culture alive despite the Spainairds. The correct way of going through it is to outlast the Spain and maybe sometime in the future. Spain will fall apart and withdraw from those mountains and the Basque can retake their mountains.

The only way to change the South is by invading and killing every last diehard southerner through outright genocide and I don't think that would go over too well.

    3. Oh, God, CC. Don't tell me Ebay is playing the fool now too. I just bought something from them last night because I'm not buying from Amazon anymore!

As for genocide, I can just hear the Jewish people of Hamburg, Munich, Dresden..... saying the same thing. There are events going on in this country today that I would have found absurd to even consider in 1971.

I am sure it will come as a surprise to you that Robert E Lee, confederate general, freed his slaves in 1862. Ulysses S Grant, Union General, later President didn't free his slaves (yep, thats right slavery in the north too!) until the 13th amendment was ratified in 1865, after the end of the war. Read some real ,not revisionist, history. Then come back and have a civil discussion.

    1. Although "racial profiling" is considered to be egregious, it's certainly practiced on Southern whites without any glimmer of gilt by the leftards. I was driving through Atlanta years ago. My Jeep had a Confederate flag sticker on the rear. A Lincoln with a black family in it pulled up next to me and slowed down to look me over, eyes big as saucers. I wasn't sure what was going on but I smiled and waved. They never blinked, then accelerated and drove off. I saw as they went by that they had New Jersey plates. My conjecture is that they were going South to visit relatives, and seeing my flag thought I would have horns and cloven hooves.

I'm sure that all this negativism being poured out on us from all quarters will have consequences. I'm not sure exactly what they will be.

I'm staying home this weekend. The crowds at the parks and in town will be off the scale.

Some 7.62X51 still shows up on the surplus market, German, Berdan primed mostly. If he is going to reload he should probably set himself up with a nice set of carbide dies, some reloading gauges for 7.62X51, and a basic reloading kit. Lee makes a nice starter kit. RCBS makes good equipment.

The magazines. I would start with CDNN if it were me, then maybe look at what Sarco has in the warehouse. Sarco sells what is called a "back up kit" or words to that effect with critical parts for the rifle. Northridge used to sell those to but I don't think they do any more. There are usually advertisements in Shotgun News for FAL parts kits. I wouldn't need the whole parts kit but sometimes those guys will sell you individual parts.

I once had a Century International Sporter FAL rebuilt to original configuration by Entreprise Arms in California. They had to replace the original European parts with American parts. I haven't talked to them in years but if they are still around they must have barrels of perfectly good European parts that a fellow could use for repairs in dire times.

I read "Evangeline" as a kid, so I have some understanding of how so many people from up your way got down here. Lucky for us they did since they certainly added a colorful cultural distinctiveness to Southern life.

I am trying really hard not to feel alienated from the rest of the country, but when I see how the politicians, actors, and businesses in the the rest of the U.S. have behaved towards us, I wonder what I owe them. I think the answer is probably not a damned thing. Maybe they should secede from us, and create a Democratic Peoples Republic of America where all the races would live in harmony, nobody would have to work, and there would be free Thunderbird and Mad Dog 2020 for all.

I mainly moved to Seattle (after 50 years living down South), to escape the heat and humidity. I really thought I was moving to a lumberjack sort of place, but found out that that hasn't been true since maybe 1965. So I'm now looking for a place away from Seattle, because the rest of the state still pretty much has their head screwed on straight.

But I remember this. He told me that he would like to have some black neighbors. I thought that randomly wishing for neighbors seemed odd and I asked him if he knew any black people. He said no, but though there were none in his town, there were some in the next town and he was sure they were nice people. That pretty much typifies how liberals think. They may know nothing at all about a subjects but they have strong views on it.

My brother lives in Corvallis, Oregon. He thought it would be a good place to live and he is a big sports fan, having graduated there in 1977. It hasn't turned out to be all that great, though. Maybe somewhere in the high desert would be good.

I read a good series of books that are set around the Corvallis area. S.M. Stirling wrote the "Dies The Fire" series. Basically, some kind of hoodoo makes it so gunpowder, electricity, and other stuff suddenly doesn't work. I know, I know... but you just have to accept it and move on with the story :). People are back to the land and must use swords, etc. Really brings out the best in good people and the worst in bad people. I guess I've read the series (6 or 7 books) about 5 times now.
