Night Rain.

夜雨

It rained all night here.  Not hard, but steady.   It's raining now.  Once the sun is up, I'm going to town.  Getting back up here may be interesting.  I'll be driving the truck, and all the muck on the jeep trail will be soaking wet.  Throwing some firewood in the back will help get over the steepest parts of the trail.  I'll go ahead and put the ax and the chain saw in the cab, because there are certain to be at branches on the trail, and if I'm just really lucky, there will be trees across it.

No parent is ever "off the hook" when it comes to their kids.

My 27 year old daughter is being "stalked" by an ex boyfriend. I never liked the guy, though I am not allowed to say so now as my wife and daughter both find this fact irrelevant.

With all the decent young men coming back from the wars in sand land,  I had hoped she'd find someone of that nature. Instead, her last two boy friends have looked like someone out of Breaking Bad or the Hell's Angels.

The last one turned out to be psychotic, and his psychiatrist says he is "bi polar" , which explains his bizarre behavior.  I don't know about that.  She's had to block him on her email, change her cell phone number, and get a restraining order. Fat lot of good any of that does. The last time she had a jerk boyfriend causing problems, I had to explain things to him personally to resolve it.  My daughter doesn't want me to do that this time, so I don't know what I can do about all this.
I ordered some mace for her.  Her Georgia concealed carry permit has expired, and in the state she lives in you have to go through all this B.S. designed to make the process for getting a permit so onerous that no one will go through it.  She doesn't carry a purse, and she very slim, so I don't know what good a CCL would do anyway.

She talked to management at work, so now one of the male workers walks her out to her car after work.  I told her to pull up right in front of her apartment. She will either be with her brother, who works at the same business, or he can come out to meet her.  She works evenings and nights, and leaving work then getting home is probably the most dangerous time.

Both she and her brother progressed far in martial arts, but I don't put a lot of faith in that. A few years ago, a young woman walking on the Appalachian Trail  up here was abducted and murdered by a serial killer. She had a black belt in karate, but he had a police truncheon.  Small women can't fight off hulking men in most circumstances. All that nonsense in the movies is so much B.S. and a sop to the feminists, none of whom ever won a medal for not being delusional.

Well.  No point in dwelling on negative aspects of life. We've done what we can within the law, and at this point that's as far as my wife and daughter want to go.

On a more positive note, I walked down the mountain and got the mail yesterday. Took a plastic bag for the mail and wore my trusty Swiss Army rain poncho. Keeps the rain off your head and shoulders but your trouser legs and boots still get soaked.

This was in the mailbox. It's a new idea for Sportsmans Guide. They usually put out little mini catalogs, but for the first time they have published a master catalog. I've looked through it briefly at this point, and there are lots of good things in there.

If you were dropped in the middle of the Amazon Basin, but could equip yourself with whatever you wanted from Sportsmans Guide, you'd be ok. Provided you weren't one of the contestants from "Alone".

Sportsman's Guide even sell guns now.

How can you not like an outfit that sells guns, ammo and field equipment?

In closing, if you want to feel depressed and angry at the same time, read this post I've linked at the bottom of the page.  Sheeple deserve everything they get. Those who can't or won't defend themselves are always going to be prey for the criminals. But it's tough on the dependents who are relying on them for protection.

  1. I feel for you. As a dad with three daughters I know how you feel. One of my daughters dated guys too stupid to fear me -and I own guns, a swamp and a shovel. Another of my daughters is a 3rd degree black belt in a system that stressed self defense, not sport. She was able to successfully defend herself against a male attacker, but she's unusually strong. She can do one armed pushups.

Then there's my youngest daughter who left a really nice guy with a stable job to marry some guy with 4 kids from a previous marriage. To be fair, he's treating her right, but still. Her first husband was a disaster. I wanted to just shoot the guy. Instead the divorce is the reason my house is not paid for.

    The dad thing never ends.

    1. Who ever said that young women like to marry men like their fathers is wrong. My daughter seems to be attracted to the complete opposite. I think this last time around she's learned her lesson, though.

I told her not to let the Georgia CCL expire. We have a reciprocal agreement with that state. Next time she comes down here we will get her a new one. Just a matter of a trip to the court house and paying $75.00. None of the ridiculous feel good nonsense that the state she works in requires.

    2. NH CCL is a one page form and cost $10. Live free or die. Takes about week in my town.

    3. Here you pay $75.00, but you go to the courthouse, leave with a paper CCL in about 15 minutes, and your regular one, that looks like a drivers license, comes in about three weeks.

But where the kids are now, you have to take some piss ant 8 hour course to prove you know which end the bullet comes out of. You pay for it, of course. Then they want paperwork going back at least to the Revolutionary War and preferable back to cave man days proving you are who you say you are. Then they want you to be finger printed. And on, and on, and on. Looks to me like they are just making it a colossal pain in the butt so no one will see it through.

  2. Hey Harry,

    (captaincrunch)

Sorry your daughter has to deal with a bad ex boyfriend. If your son and daughter lived near my part of Texas. Myself and a few friends could visit the ex-boyfriend and explain to him why it would be in his best interest to avoid your daughter. Now if he did not comply, the ex-boyfriend may find himself in a box being shipped to a former female Canadian soldier of our acquaintance who I think may know something about 'Extra Military Instruction' and make life uncomfortable for any man in existence.

I gotta check out that mega sportsman guide catalog.

One thing I gotta put out there. The elections are coming and everyone will get nervous. Ammo will disappear of store selves, guns will sold and gun stores will be cleaned out again. Prices are good. If anyone is going got get some mags, ammo etc.
    Nows the time....

I got two ten round mags for the CZ .22 for a good price. I know they are only 10 rounders but with people getting nervous everything is fair game.

The best prices for mags on the internet in my opinion are at 44mag.com

I still want to pick up a few odds and ends here and there just to make sure I can go a very, very long period without needing parts, mags, springs etc in case stuff goes through the roof on prices and availability is non-existent.

    1. If it gets to be worrisome enough I will go up there for a couple of days.

The elections are still a year off, but there's no harm in getting what you need now. If Hillary gets elected it would be wise to have done so.

  3. I don't know, Harry...I have a feeling that a chat with you about proper behavior concerning your daughter would be a much better deterrent than any restraining order. I understand your frustration. There was a time when I was forbidden to speak my mind in a similar situation.

And I fail to understand why anyone would wish to put their family at risk by being unprepared to defend them, especially with the escalation of violence these days. Criminals don't listen to reason. If they did, they wouldn't be criminals.

    1. My wife and daughter are concerned that things may get out of hand if I go up there. I don't think so but I'm not going to force the issue, at least now..

There are a lot of people who are just stupid.

    2. Vicki, the last time an issue came up like this, she had her boyfriend staying at the apartment. When they broke up, the guy wouldn't leave. He was not being very pleasant. My son called me and told me if I did not do something soon, he was going to handle it. The last thing I want is my son involved in something that could get the police involved.

I had a frank and open exchange of views with the ex boyfriend, it got heated, and I had to use persuasion to get him out of there. My wife and my daughter thought I went overboard, and I may have a little. I have a fearful temper, which I have worked hard for 30 years to control with great success. Some things I just don't tolerate well.

She's a smart girl, calm and collected, and not afraid to do what has to be done. If this guy is not too crazy to think straight even a little, he won't mess with her at close range.

  4. Harry,

I agree with you.....changing your telephone number, securing your email, and getting a restraining order doesn't stop a wacko at all. I pray your daughter doesn't have any issues with this ex boyfriend, and he goes on his way leaving her alone.

    1. Apparently there has been a problem for more than a month now, but my wife and daughter agreed not to tell me about it. They only told me now because the jerk isn't going away and my daughter is getting stressed over it. That's just what she needs, more stress.

  5. Here in Maine we just had a situation similar to the one you describe. It did not end well for the lady after she dumped him. She took out a restraining order to keep him away. Then the ex-boyfriend broke in to her house tortured and killed her, while her kids slept, and was on the run for 2 months. He was spotted a couple times and someone even got a photo of him during that time. He only turned himself in this week when the mosquitoes and black-flies got too thick in the woods where he was hiding and he feared the cops would shoot him.

    1. If this guy breaks into my daughters apartment, it will be the last thing he ever does. Either she or my son will shoot his ass with a 12 gauge loaded with special "don't penetrate the walls and kill your neighbor" ammunition.

I'm more concerned about going to work and coming to work.

  6. I've been watching Alone on the internet. There's lots about what happened that surprised me. I realize that the footage is edited but in random order some of my thoughts are;
I kinda hate the guy with the canoe tapped out. He seemed by far to try the most, he built a canoe!
Why did it take Ga (and zero others) so long on the fish trap? All those rainy days early on would've been great for building traps.
I think I'd have tried weaving a dam to place in one of the places where the tide drained out. Put it out in a low spot from 1 side to another at low tide and see if some fish might get caught behind it. Maybe add a funnel and sides and bait.
What about the doofus that dropped his Ferro rod? Important, life altering, stuff gets attached to your neck, just like your head.
Only 1 made char for lighting fires?
I think I'd have tried early on for a hard side structure to sleep in considering the bears and voyages. Early on you still have good energy.
The Ga guy is kinda goofy, but I think he's pretty well read too. Just some of the things he's talked about. The goofiness may just be his way of dealing with the stress.
On the last episode Ga said something along the lines of, Of course I'd rather be home with my kids, and I've proven I can do this. But I'm sticking it out.
Out of all 10 guys I think he's the only one that hasn't been whiney even once, hard to beat.

    1. Most of those guys were whiny metrosexuals. I was horrified when the big guy from rural Florida turned craven after the first night. Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh MY! What did he expect in the woods for Gods sake. It embarrassed me that he was from the South.

The Georgia guy has the right temperament to last it out. He's not afraid of the woods and he doesn't feel compelled to weep and moan as the others seem to think is obligatory.

It's going to be a real shocker if that little guy that's still in the game wins in the end. He's done more boo hooing than any two others combined.

I think the guy you mentioned only tapped out because he ran out of pot and opiates! ;-)

I saw an article on the news that says the show has been wildly popular, and has been renewed for a second season. I know Dani from South Africa watches it, so it's getting some distribution.

    1. She cool headed, well trained and has no qualms about getting the job done when it needs doing. To be honest, I'm more concerned about the guy attacking her and getting killed than anything else. My daughter has enough stress without dealing with this. I feel better about it because she and her brother, who's a year younger, share a place. The back of their apartment is right on the lake shore, so unless this jerk has a pair of water wings he can only come up to the front door.

She can't and shouldn't run from the problem child. If you run from people like that you'll be living in motels the rest of your life.

Thanks for the good thoughts. I see the Sheriff's Department killed off the psycho out there that you were worried about. Good news.

  9. It's been rainy here in Nebraska as well. We had a major drop in temps. I've been putting the boys in light long sleeve shirts, and jeans.

That's too bad about your daughter! I've watched way too many episodes of that show called Stalker. I only had 1 problem with that when I was younger. The guy kept following me. He put developed photo paper on the lights in the hallway that had my name carved in them with a heart. It lit up. I tore it down. He asked me out, and I said I was going out with this one girl. He got the idea that I was a lesbian, and left me alone. That was the 1 time in my life I didn't care if someone thought I was a lesbian.

I did have to block someone from Facebook. He tried to chat with me every time I got on.

Stalking can be a serious issue.

    1. Alissa, it can, and there aren't many things you can do about it. I hope eventually he will just disappear, or die of a meth overdose.

My daughter can handle herself, and her brother is right there with her. She'll have to stick it out, she can't bail on her job and her apartment, on her life, because of one bad decision. It's a measure of how much I love my daughter that I haven't said "G--D-- it maybe next time I tell you some guy is a waste of air you'll listen."

  10. Daughters......What can a guy do. My only conciliation is that unless it was violent (not moody or mean or annoying but actually violent) my limited understanding is that it is unlikely to get violent later.

On the fortunate side I have at least a solid 12 years before that is a concern.

    1. It's never been physically violent. My daughter is not stupid enough to stay around a guy who mistreats her that way. The problem is that this character doesn't take his medications, then starts acting all psycho. He's capable of anything. It's guys like him who go into theaters and start blazing. It's hard to estimate what someone like that will do when they are on the downward swing.

  12. Harry, The only good thing I can say is that a smallish woman can justify lethal force very easily. I told my wife to shoot anyone who is a threat. Odds a nice middle class woman with no priors gets in trouble for defending herself in a pro freedom state, about nil.
